Google Doesn’t Differentiate between Search Results for Traveling in X vs Living in X

Google has recently confirmed that they don’t discriminate in search results irrespective of anyone traveling to a city or living in a city, particularly for location-specific searches.

Mueller also said that Google does try to understand the location of the searcher in location-related searches.

Google does try to determine language / locale / geotargeting automatically, sometimes the URL parts help. However, we don’t differentiate between “living in X” from “traveling in X”.

When you search for a “coffee shop near me”, Google will try to show a coffee shop near your location if it can detect where you are.

But when you are specifically searching for coffee shops in New York and are currently in London, you should be specific and add a location to your query for the desired result.
